Colorado has a wonderful natural landscape and, during the fall season, there are numerous great places where you can admire the shimmering colors of the leaves.
Here is a short guide for your September-October trips:
Aspen
This location is probably the most obvious choice, because it is renowned for the gorgeous golden and bronze hues of the aspen trees. On the road to Aspen, you can also reach Independence Pass, or you can drive 12 miles southwest, to the Maroon bells, for more stunning autumn colors and the breathtaking sight of mountains reflecting in the Maroon Lake.
Rocky Mountain National Park
The scenery in this location is magnificent regardless the season, although autumn is probably the most spectacular. Driving on Trail Ridge Road offers picture perfect sights every step of the way, which makes this location an absolute favorite for photographers and leaf peepers. Autumn is also the elk rut season, so you may have the chance to spot these beautiful animals, or at least hear their call.
La Veta Pass
La Veta Pass is on Route 160, in Southern Colorado, and represents one of the most scenic drives during the autumn, due to the magnificent dark green pines and golden aspen trees, towered by the mountains (Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Spanish Peaks).
